Surfing in West Clare

Lahinch is world renowned for its surf and is rapidly becoming Ireland's premiere 'Surf City'. Irish surf champion John McCarthy put Lahinch on the world surfing map when he surfed Aileens in 2005.

While some of Ireland's most challenging waves are to be found here, Lahinch's mellow beach break is the perfect spot for absolute beginners to catch their first wave - and you couldn't ask to be in better hands with a lesson from the Lahinch Surf School and John McCarthy himself. For those of you who want to take your surfing to the next level, we are pleased to recommend Ben's Surf Clinic for its invaluable, on-the-water instruction and small, personal groups. Ask at reception and we would be happy to organise individual or group lessons.

There are 5 different breaks right on our doorstep so you can grab your gear and be surfing one of these in no time; the beach break suitable for beginners, a right beach peak or any of three left hand reef breaks; Cornish, outer Cornish & Cregg. Liscannor Bay has many other breaks and with a little bit of exploration can reveal some hidden gems...

There are two main breaks in Doolin. The first is Crab Island and is only suitable for experienced surfers due to its powerful, spitting barrels and distance from shore. The second is a long point break, more mellow than Crab but to be also respected.

Spanish Point

Spanish holds three main reef breaks - the inner, middle and outer reef breaks are world class when they are on - and a mellower beach break for beginners.

If everywhere else is flat as a pancake, Doonbeg is the place to head for as it will pick up any and all swell going. A real summer and small swell spot. There are numerous other waves along the coast of West Clare so it's up to you to get out there and hunt them down!
